Fred Lane Pics/Panel
Okay, while the pics are loading I figured I would go with the thoughts here so I can post ASAP. I am struggling to pinpoint exactly who said what and stuff like that (it was my first Con people! I was just so excited to be there!!) I do know however, that I love the YED, and Fred was just so funny and filled his panel with gestures and was very expressive when he spoke! Some memories/thoughts on Fred.
- First the drama, if you haven't heard about why some of the fans were upset with Fred, I am not gonna say anything, except I didn't mind, I mean it wasn't a big deal to me....well, too much. I mean, he did block the pretty (Steve Carlson) a little at the Dessert Party because he was so excited to talk to Steve he turned around and had his back to everyone because he was so enthralled with the conversation he was having with Steve. (and really, who can blame him)
- The confusion about how to spell his last name is self induced. He changed it from "Lehne" to "Lane" (for PR reasons sounded like) and he told us the meaning of "Lehne" but I can't for the life of me remember it. (sorry :P)
- He had to have piles of white chalk on the ground when he was wearing the yellow contacts because he could see them in his peripheral vision, and he kept missing his mark without them, so to get through a scene, he had to use the white chalk technique.
He also had to have the camera operator put a bright bulb ontop of the camera he was supposed to be looking into for a scene because he was basically blind with those YED contacts in, and he could make out light, and some shapes but that was about it. Considering this, I have way more respect for him and his portrayal of the YED now, I mean, TRY doing your job without being able to see anything!
- Has a GF (who said "And what would you do?!" when he threatens to quit acting, reminding him that it is really all he knows how to do LOL).
- He has been a working actor for 30 years, since he was 18 years old!
- He was going to a big audition for one of his idols and had to go to the bathroom (asked that we not spread the story around about who it was in the audition, so I can't say....hmm, not that I remember now that I think about it) so he went into the bathroom real quick and when he was um...relieving himself, the idol big shot that he was going to meet in the audition was in the urinal next to him! And he (being nervous and excited) was like "HI! I'm Fred" and the guy put out his hand to shake Fred's and went "Hi, I'm SoandSo, nice to meet you." and returned his hand and finished his business! I swear I almost fell out of my chair I was laughing so hard!
- His kids didn't like the character that he played in a TV movie in which he portrayed a child molester (yeah, cause I don't think I know anyone who would want their friends/family to play one of those on TV)
- When he was filming the above mentioned movie, and he was in the 'schoolyard' set like stalking the little kids with a gun no less (okay, yuck) there were classes going on, and some of the kids were watching the filming from their class windows, and one little boy leaned out the window and went "HEY! You're that evil guy!!! HEY EVIL GUY!" obviously recognizing him from Supernatural, but what made it funnier (kids say the best stuff sometimes) is that he was carrying around a gun for the scene, and all the rest of the kids were like "OMG!" shocked face not understanding that he wasn't really "Evil Guy"!
- Doesn't get to kiss the girl much anymore in roles, but is loving playing the 'evil guy' and getting in depth character roles instead of the 'guy that gets the girl', likes the complexity of being more than a pretty face.
- Another story! He was in ConAir as I am sure you all know, and they were standing around talking (he and John Malcovich and Marty McSorley) after a take and the director came over and Fred being a little inexperienced, had just finished a scene where the pilot was shot, and then John just walks out of the cockpit. Well Fred asked "Okay, so he shoots the pilot, why don't I (played the copilot) just radio for help? I mean, it doesn't make sense that I just sit there." The director got all pissy and walked away, and John Malcovich leaned in and said "I was thinking the same thing, but I am so glad you said it." SO after shooting was ended the execs spotted the mistake in logic (after they heard an actor had mentioned the lack of believability) during a prescreen, and Fred and everyone had to come back and rebuild sets and refilm to 'correct' the mistake so that Fred 'the co-pilot' wouldn't be able to 'call for help' after the pilot was shot. The slip up he caught cost the film company millions or possibly billions to reshoot, when if the director would have just listened to him when they were shooting, they could have reshot and fix then not costing anyone anything but a little time! So awesome that he is great with the logic, I just love it!!
- Someone asked why he always plays the creepy bad guy (LOL) and he said that they are more interesting roles (which is pretty much a stock answer) but then he also said that he got pigeonholed into that part without even realizing it, but he likes to try to find what makes the bad guy more than just the stock 'evil' character, I took it as he looks for the three dimensionality of the bad guys, cause they are complicated, and may have some good or valid reasons behind the madness that is 'evil' thought that was very insightful!
- OH, and him and Jason (pretty much everyone but the boys who are old pros at this) were amazed by themselves being on the big screen behind them, so that is why there are shots of their backs facing the screen.
- He graciously agreed to say the line "Boys shouldn't play with Daddy's guns" which he was like "Why does everyone like that so much?!" kind of like when Jensen had to be BEGGED to do the blue steel, apparently somethings never get old for some fans, poor guys...
- He sang the same version of "Sympathy for the Devil" that he did in Chicago, (apologized to the Chicago goers that hey had to hear it twice) and said he would be singing something new for Dallas (see below for the rumor about WHAT/who he will be singing with)
- RUMOR Someone said that he is going to be singing a different song for the Dallas Convention, and that lo and behold, he would be singing it with Steve (perhaps that's what all the excitement during the Dessert Party to talk to Steve about was)
- Probably only matters to me, cause I am a hockey freak, but when he mentioned Marty McSorely he said "If there are any hockey fans here" (I chimed in with a loud "WOOHOO!" which he saw/heard cause I was in the front row, and nodded at me ) then you know who he is! He is the reason that Wayne Gretsky is "The Great One" he was the enforcer for Wayne, and followed Wayne around just beating the crap out of people who tried to mess with Wayne, and got into some 'displinary' problems with the league because of it. But Wayne wouldn't have been able to do as much scoring if he didn't have McSorely watching his back." So I am an even bigger Fred fan now, because he not only KNOWS about hockey, he doesn't hero worship Wayne Gretsky (yes, he is amazing, but he had help to be as good as he was) and that honesty won him BIG points on my part!
- He was very gracious and friendly with the fans, and thanked us all for being there to see him, he was really a great guy who genuinely was happy to be there for doing what he loves! He was very enthusiastic and all around full of energy!
When he came to our table for the dessert party, we found this out:
- Missed his son's baseball game for the Con,(which he really seemed upset to miss, but didn't make us feel (or me at least) like it was our fault at all, or uncomfortable for 'dragging' him away from his family) and has a 19 year old daughter.
- He was LOVING this chicks leather pants that she was rocking during the photo op. He went "YES! She has leather pants!"
My thoughts:
- If you go to a Con and get a photo op, be warned he is a loveable guy! Like he wraps you up in a hug, and is just smiley as can be! (so if you are uncomfortable with your personal space being invaded, I suggest you don't get a photo with Fred, cause he is just a love!) OH, and he is pretty much up for anything, I mean, some chick kissed him on the cheek during her photo op with him, and I did my own wacky thing, which I was completely thrilled with, because it turned out so well!! AND the photographer said I was the only one who thought of ANYTHING like that at the Cons he has done photo's for, so I am happy with my One of a kind YED pic!
Sorry if this is boring or less than informed, but I am only typing what I remember, and I kind of ant this all down so that I can remember it when the Con gets further and further away. And yay, I remembered more than I thought I would about him!
So the reward...the pics! He makes so great faces, and I managed to capture some! :)
